Falls Prevention & Exercise Classes
TransCare Community Support Services has been identified by the funder, Central East Local Health Integration Network (CELHIN), as one of two service providers for Fall Prevention and Exercise Classes hosted in 39 different locations in the Scarborough area. Classes are FREE and available to seniors in the community.
Falls Prevention Class:
Falls Prevention Class is a group session which will focus on various exercise routines to reduce falls in seniors (e.g. screening, risk assessments, education re: trip, hazards, lighting, medications, etc.).
Assessment of participants will be performed by a healthcare professional. Seniors will be provided with 10 weeks of group sessions for a maximum of 2 hours per week with a trained instructor. Fall Prevention class will focus on various exercise routines to improve strength and balance thereby preventing injury and falls.
At the end of the 10-week period, participants will be reassessed by a health care professional and will be directed to either continue to participate in fall prevention classes or exercise classes.
Exercise Class:
An Exercise Class is a group session which will focus on improving and maintaining functional performance through strength and balance to maintain functional status (wellness) thereby preventing injury and falls. Class will be available to seniors in the community at large in addition to those who may be residents at a specific site (e.g. retirement home, seniors’ apartment building, and other community locations). Exercise classes are 48 weeks in length for a maximum of two (2) hours per week.
